OLIVETTE, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- A homeowner near the Ladue-Olivette border was in for a surprise Sunday afternoon, when he walked downstairs and discovered a strange man hiding in his basement.

The bizarre story began Saturday night as Overland police were searching for a male suspect. The man was able to elude police, then allegedly parked his truck in Olivette and randomly selected a home on Dielman Road to break into.

Police say the suspect broke a basement window and remained in the home overnight. The homeowner noticed the broken window, according to police, then went downstairs around 4 p.m. Sunday to investigate.

The suspect reportedly took off running when he was spotted, but the homeowner was able to snap a photo of the man as he fled.

Police from three different agencies spent hours canvassing nearby neighborhoods. The suspect remains on the loose Sunday night, according to officials, but is not believed to be armed or still in the same area.
