(KMOV) – Potholes have been even more of a problem this year in the St. Louis area thanks to an abnormally brutal winter, and the statistics back it up.
According to the website pothole.info, St. Louis has the 8th worst streets for potholes in the United States.
Kansas City, Mo. also ranked among the top 10, with California cities San Jose and Los Angeles holding down the top two spots.
The extreme temperature swings this year, which MoDOT officials say was the worst in decades, helped make it an especially brutal year for St. Louis regarding potholes.
Potholes are mainly caused by fluctuations in temperatures above and below freezing.
The Independent Insurance Agents and Brokers of America estimates nearly $4.8 billion is spent each year repairing pothole-related damage. About 500,000 insurance claims are filed for pothole damage annually.
