BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A handgun was found on the Southwest Illinois College campus Thursday afternoon.
SWIC Spokesman Mike Flemming confirms that a hand gun was discovered around 2:30pm in the possession of a college student.
The incident began when another student noticed what he thought was an individual engaged in possible drug activity and alerted the campus police.
They confronted the individual, searched him and found not drugs but the pistol.
He was held until the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office responded to take the man into custody.
Flemming declined to comment on any possible motive for the student carrying a gun on campus but he did commend the tipster for alerting campus police to a potentially dangerous situation.
When officials at SWIC were asked about any change in security measures following the incident, they released this statement:
“While we can presume there will be a heightened sense of awareness among students, faculty and staff – which is a good thing, since a student tip resulted in a prompt and successful apprehension in this case – SWIC Public Safety procedures will continue to be executed in accordance with college policies that place the highest priority on campus security. This includes our past and continued employment of commissioned police officers as SWIC Public Safety officers.”
