(KMOV) -- A St. Charles man said he is disappointed after he said he was disrespected by an employee at a St. Peters restaurant.
Kent Shanks went to the Steak ‘N Shake located in the 3900 block of Mexico Rd. and ordered a strawberry shake and a burger.
After finishing his meal, Shanks walked up to the cashier. That’s when he noticed the employee working the register listed his name on the receipt as, “BLACK GUY”.
“I couldn’t believe it. My jaw completely dropped open,” Shanks told News 4 on Wednesday.
Shanks said he was surprised the cashier, also an African-American, would do that.
“My adrenaline kicked in and I just wanted to leave the restaurant as quickly as possible. I couldn’t even eat all the food,” he said.
Shanks told News 4 there’s no excuse for that behavior and believes the employee should lose his job. He called the corporate number for Steak ‘N Shake to complain about the experience.
The district manager for the company called him back Wednesday morning and told Shanks he would address the issue with the employees.
"I guess he thought it would be funny? Or maybe cute? I didn't find anything cute about it," Shanks said.
Shanks said after working in the food service industry for more than 20 years, he can find no reasoning behind the employee’s actions. He says he will not be returning to Steak ‘N Shake.
"Personally I think he should lose his job over it because it's like why would you do that to someone? That's just totally ignorant," Shanks said.
Shanks and his wife, Jennifer Shanks, posted a picture of the receipt on Facebook and received several comments.
“A lot of people have shared the picture, saying it’s not right and that they can’t believe it,” Shanks said.
KMOV has made several calls to the corporate offices of Steak ‘N Shake but has yet to receive a response.
