ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The city of St. Louis and civic organizations are teaming up to develop a downtown center where bicyclists can store their bikes and gear and even shower before going to work.

Plans for the region's first public commuter bike center were announced Wednesday. The city expects the center to be in operation this fall.

Bicyclists will pay a monthly fee to use the center, but the amount was not released.

Plans call for a 1,300-square-foot space to be used at 1011 Locust St. The building is owned by LoftWorks, which is using a $181,600 Department of Energy stimulus grant to buy lockers, install interior bike racks and help fund operation for two years.
