ST. LOUIS (AP) -- A federal marshal killed in a gun battle with a St. Louis felon he was helping to arrest is being remembered as a courageous member of an agency where death on the job was a rarity until recent weeks.

Tuesday's death of John Perry in the shootout that left suspect Carlos Boles dead and two other law enforcers wounded was just the second time since at least 1993 that the U.S. Marshals Service has lost a colleague to gunfire.

That's according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, which says the only other death of a marshal by gunfire in at least the past 18 years came last month in West Virginia.

The two other law enforcers wounded with Perry are recovering.
