(KMOV) -- Starting today, St. Louis city will begin taking bids on surveillance cameras.

Alderman Antonio French wants to add 12 cameras to the 21st Ward. The cameras will cost $300,000.

French wants to have the cameras installed in the Fairgrounds Park area by the end of next month.

There are already surveillance cameras in place all around the Landing and the Riverfront.

Money to fund the cameras will come from the Capital Improvement Fund and the 21st Ward has elected to use its funds on the cameras.

Alderman Antonio tells News 4 the cameras will help police with solving crimes.

This will not prevent crime its just another waste of money. Criminals do not care if there is a camera or not. Convenience stores have cameras and they still get robbed so who does the city think they are fooling.

Notice how they didn't say PREVENT crime--"the cameras will help police with solving crimes". The quotes say it all. Are you kidding me? That's $3,600,000 dollars. Can you even imagine how far that amount of money could go--for good cause; but instead it will be wasted on trying to catch criminals.

i got it stick cameras in the city's offices and see how much tax dollars are wasted..... until people stand up for our rights this is how it will be...and i understand how the law works and this is why they get away with it, when you are in public you have no reasonable expectation of privacy.. What is Privacy?; History of Privacy Law; Modern Privacy Law; Privacy of Businesses; Possible Examples; Privacy of Garbage; ... Therefore, under current law, there is no expectation of privacy. If the customer is a famous person, the store clerk could report the type of underwear that the famous person purchased

Is anyone stupid enough to think that camera's will really make a positive difference? In the very rough neighborhoods the residents will simply destroy the camera, problem solved. Sure in certain situations cameras are useful tools, however cameras in places people do not want them quickly are destroyed or disabled. Buying camera's will not really have any positive impact on some of St. Louis's worst neighborhoods. What will in fact help is more Police and or National Guard, there is no valid reason to be sending guard units all over the world, when large cities in our nation need those same services The guard was never meant, or intended to be providing improvements in foreign nations, those services are paid for by us and certainly needed in the USA. Give the national guard that 300K let them provide a real and visual service to the City of St. Louis.
