(KMOV) – The St. Louis Zoo is welcoming the newest member of their family.
On Friday afternoon, Rani, the zoo’s 15-year-old Asian elephant gave birth to a girl.
The baby elephant is the second baby for Rani and the third for Raja, the baby’s father. Raja was the first elephant ever born at the St. Louis Zoo and is now 18.
Rani and her baby are not on display yet and a public debut date has not yet been set.
For the last two months, the staff at the zoo has been on 24-hour pregnancy watch.
They have not been able to determine the new elephant’s weight or height because Rani has been very protective of her newborn.
The zoo plans to hold a “Name the Baby Elephant” contest.
