Authorities are hoping a new Smartphone app will lead to more residents helping stop criminals.

St. Louis Regional Crimestoppers is pushing the app to try to get people to text them to report a crime and give them tips.

Crimestoppers wants to tap into a society that is saturated with - and depends on - cell phones.

“When you text a tip, you just go into your own texting service on your phone and type in ‘STL, and then your information, and then ‘crimes,’ said Officer Lisa Pisciotta with St. Louis Regional Crimestoppers. “If you want an app on your phone, say you live in a neighborhood where you see a lot happening, Crimestoppers also has an app for smart phones and iPhones.”

The free App is called Tip Submit and can be downloaded at any App store.
