CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOV) – The smell of natural gas forced authorities to evacuate the St. Louis County Justice Center in Clayton on Wednesday.
Several hundred workers were forced to leave the building in the 100 block of South Central Avenue around 2 p.m. as Clayton Fire officials and Laclede Gas workers looked for a leak.
Clayton Fire Chief Mark Thorp says very small amounts of gas were detected, but they were not considered dangerous.
Everyone was allowed back inside the building by about 2:45 p.m. Inmates remained in the jail during the 90-minute evacuation.
Officials were still investigating the source of the gas smell. They said they believe it came into the building through the ventilation system.
No injuries were reported.
