ST. CHARLES (KMOV.com) -- St. Charles police are monitoring problems on Main Street where there have been complaints of too much drinking and driving .
Wednesday News 4 has the latest numbers from the police crack-down.
Police in St. Charles have a specific plan when it comes to patrolling Main, but last weekend they took it up a notch.
Officers from all around St. Charles County helped with a DWI check point Friday night on Booneslick Road, a main corridor between Main and Fifth Street, and Interstate 70.
They stopped almost 500 vehicles between 9:30 pm and 2:00 am. 49 people took some kind of sobriety test for impaired driving..
Police arrested 20 people for driving while intoxicated, including one person who drove the wrong way down an alley to try to avoid the checkpoint altogether.
Authorities hope the message was clear to drivers.
“Hopefully it had significant impact that night,” said St. Charles Police Lieutenant Dave Senter. “But just the fact that the operation was held always helps. Just the public knowledge of that and hopefully that makes somebody think twice.”
