ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV.com / AP) -- An apartment building in St. Charles was evacuated after a fire broke out early Sunday morning.

The St. Charles Fire Department said the they were called to The Boulders and Katy Trail complex round 1:30 a.m.

Sprinklers activated and kept the fire under control until crews arrived, fire officials said. Residents were evacuated to the parking lot while firefighter battled the blaze. It took crews about an hour to fully extinguish the flames.

Two apartments suffered fire damage. In addition, a third apartment had heavy water damage.

On Monday, officials said careless smoking may have started the fire.

Nobody was injured.
