(KMOV) -- Kim Scheriffus just found herself in a bad position. Scheriffus' daughter Emily is attending 7th grade in August, and she just learned the school bus won't pick up her daughter.

The story is not unique, nearly 600 students in the St. Charles School District will need to find a new ride to school this year. Scheriffus says, "I sent the superintendent a note requesting some suggestions, and was basically told, 'I'm the parent and it's up to me.'"

According to the superintendent the cuts are budget related. In a normal year, the district receives nearly $1 million in funds from the state for transportation. In late June, the district learned that number would be slashed by $400,000.

Superintendent Randal Charles says the cuts will save the district $325,000 a year. The cuts will impact students who live less than a mile and a half from school. Charles says the cuts will not impact students enrolled in kindergarten through 4th grade, or special needs students.

Here's how the numbers break down:

4 buses will be eliminated at St. Charles High

4 buses will be eliminated at St. Charles West

2 buses will be eliminated at Jefferson Elementary

6 buses at middle schools including Hardin Middle School
