Poll:
Do you think bicycles should be banned from state highways in St. Charles?

(KMOV) -- The St. Charles County Council is considering a bike ban for area cyclists.

Council members met Monday night to discuss the proposal. The proposed ordinance would keep cyclists off state highways in southwest St. Charles County

Council member Joe Brazil says this is the number one complaint that he gets from his constituents.

Brazil’s proposed ordinance would also ban bicycles on Highways D, DD, F, Z and Highway 94 from its intersection with Highway 40 to the St. Charles County line.

The Missouri Bicycle and Pedestrian Federation strongly oppose the proposed ban. They say that before banning bikes altogether the council should meet with the affected groups.

The federation also believes the county commission does not have the authority to enact the proposed ban without consulting the Missouri Department of Transportation.

The bill must be read one more time before the county council takes a final vote, which should happen sometime in August.

A key part of the legislation says the ban will be in effect until shoulders are built.

The county now has $10 million in place to build those shoulders, and that construction should begin next year.

What do you think of the proposed ban? Vote in the poll to the right and leave your comments below.
