(KMOV) -- A south St. Louis mother is charged with kidnapping and neglect after authorities found her two children locked in a closet, extremely malnourished.

It was reported St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department received a call about children screaming in the apartment of Monique Winston, 28. When officers arrived at the scene, they found her two children barricaded in two separate closets. A neighbor told authorities they saw Winston leaving the apartment at 9:00 a.m.

Her children, a three-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, were taken to a hospital to be treated for malnourishment, ringworm, and serious physical injuries.

Reports say the children were found to be extremely thin, with one of the children’s weight being in the fifth percentile for a child his age.

Winston admitted to putting her children in the closets “every other three days” since November 2013.

She is charged with abuse, neglect and endangering the welfare of a child.
