(KMOV) -- Crews with the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District are making repairs after an eight inch sewer main broke and leaked sewage in South St. Louis County.  The spill happened yesterday in the 3200 block of Patterson Place when the sewer main broke.

The broken main is currently leaking into a tributary of Mattese Creek. It’s unknown how much sewage has entered the creek and its tributary.

MSD crews expect to have the sewer main repaired some time later this evening.

MSD asks residents to stay away from the area for at least the next 48 hours so they can make the necessary repairs and clean up the sewage spill.
