(KMOV) – Authorities are searching for a gunman after shots were fired near a St. Louis officer patrolling a neighborhood where hot-spot policing began just a week ago.
Police say the officer was patrolling the Wells-Goodfellow neighborhood near the intersection of Wabada and Clara around 9:15 p.m. when he heard a gunshot. The officer says he then heard a projectile hitting the pavement before he fled the scene.
Officers searched the area but could not find the shooter.
The shooting came exactly a week after a new round of hot-spot policing began in the north St. Louis neighborhood, which has seen at least five homicides since the beginning of April. Four others were killed in Wells-Goodfellow in January, February and March.
St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson says assaults with deadly weapons doubled in April compared to last year.
