ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Stores throughout Missouri were crowded with shoppers early on Black Friday, and retailers are hoping for a strong holiday season.

Lines were already forming on Thanksgiving morning outside of some stores as shoppers tried to be first in line for deep discounts on electronics and other goods. Many stores opened early on Friday, offering big sales to those who showed up in the pre-dawn hours.

In Columbia, shoppers at a Toys R Us reported that customers waiting outside the store pulled hair, threw punches and shoved each other once the doors opened at midnight. The Columbia Daily Tribune reports that police were summoned but made no arrests.
