(KMOV) – Police are searching for a man who broke into a St. Charles apartment and sexually assaulted a Lindenwood University student on Thursday.

Police said the incident happened around 3:45 a.m. at the Time Centre Apartments at 901 Time Centre Dr. That’s located about two miles from the Lindenwood University campus.

According to police, a 22-year-old woman was inside her home when the suspect forced himself inside. He then sexually assaulted the woman and fled the scene. The victim was transported to the hospital for treatment.

“It's a little alarming considering that I'm a young woman that walks around this campus by myself all the time, but security's been all around campus," said Lindenwood freshman Lena Fountain.

Police said the suspect was described as a black man in his 20s, with short hair, five foot eight inches tall and weighing 150 to 180 pounds; police also said he was wearing a tan coat and white basketball shorts.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the St. Charles Police Department at 636-949-3330.
