(KMOV) -- Two sex offenders have recently walked away from a Missouri Department of Corrections facility downtown. It’s called the St. Louis Community Release Center and it’s a place where paroled offenders can live while they work or go to school.
News 4 went to the facility Monday after learning Shawn Akery didn't return to the faclilty.
Akery, a registered sex offender for attempting to rape a woman in 2007, Wednesday police say checked himself out of the facility and didn’t come back.
Later that day, police say he forced a woman to the ground outside of her apartment downtown and tried to rape her.
“Absolutely unfortunate and scary that it happened here downtown,” said Levi Nelligan who’s often downtown.
People we talked to weren’t even aware a parolee facility was so nearby.
“You think you might want to keep that away from a locally active population but at the same time people need a place to work and live somewhere,” Nelligan said.
But it’s far from the first time someone has left the center only to reoffend. Last summer, News 4 reported about Ronnell Edwards who allegedly molested a 7-year-old boy, was paroled to the center, walked away and then went straight to his victim’s school
The supervisor of the facility wouldn’t answer questions about safeguards and only referred News 4 crew to officials in Jefferson City who didn’t respond to inquiries as of Monday evening.
