EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill.—Funeral services are pending for a 1-year-old girl who East St. Louis police say was run over by a car after a boy sitting in the vehicle started the engine and put it into gear.
Investigators are calling Jay’lah Keith’s death Saturday afternoon an accident.
Police say an 11-year-old boy had grabbed the car keys without his mother’s knowledge and climbed into the vehicle to listen to the radio shortly before 4 p.m.
After he turned the music off, a 12-year-old boy who was also in the car started the vehicle and put it into gear. The vehicle rolled forward and ran over the 1-year-old girl.
East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said it’s too early to say if the boys will face criminal charges.
The victim’s grandmother, Elverita Graham, tells the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that the girl, her parents and three siblings live in Belleville and were visiting Saturday as they regularly do.
