ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Security concerns have arisen after two Washington University students were robbed during separate incidents near campus.

Washington University, which owns more than 1,200 off-campus apartments, sent out two crime alerts warning students this week about the robberies.

The latest incident happened Thursday when a student was robbed at gunpoint near the intersection of Waterman and Rosedale, just blocks from campus and a neighborhood filled with students.

A crime alert email went out less than 30 minutes after the student was robbed. It happened practically right outside of Wash U student Katie Meola’s front door.

“It’s a little worrisome, it happened during the day, but not really changing like how I go about my life, Meola said. “Definitely at night, sure to be with someone or not walking alone.”

On Monday morning, just west of campus, a man broke into a student’s apartment through a partially open window in the 7300 block of Forsyth.

The student and a second victim were robbed.

Roughly 3,500 students live off-campus in university or privately-owned buildings. The vast majority are within walking or biking distance of the campus.

A crime alert from the Washington University Police Department warns students of what has happened and is a reminder of what to do if they are a victim.

“The student did what we tell our students to do, which is don’t fight ‘em, don’t question ‘em,” said Washington University Associate Vice Chancellor Steve Givens.

Unversity City police say they have increased patrols along Forsyth, but believe that robbery was an isolated incident.

University City police say the suspect in the robbery on Forsyth is black, about 35 to 40 years old, and around 5-foot- 9. He was wearing a white hooded sweatshirt.

The suspect from Thursday’s armed robbery is black, in his late 20s, about 5-feet-7, with a heavy build and a beard.
