(KMOV) – A 17-year-old passenger is the second person to die after a teen driving a stolen vehicle slammed into a tree in St. Louis Tuesday afternoon.
Martez Edwards was hospitalized after the vehicle he was in lost control on ice and crashed into a tree at the intersection of North Euclid and Calvin Avenues around 3:30 p.m. He was pronounced dead Wednesday morning.
The driver, 15-year-old Darrius Clay, died at the scene.
Police say Clay was driving a stolen 2008 Mercury Sable, which was taken from the 4700 block of Margaretta Tuesday morning.
Police say the car was one of 81 vehicles stolen this year after owners left them unattended to warm up with the keys still inside. As many as 350 vehicles have been stolen so far in 2014.
It was not immediately clear if Edwards or Clay were responsible for stealing the vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
