(KMOV) -- For the second time this school year, a crisis team was sent to Sumner High School.  Counselors were on hand to speak with students and staff after a student was gunned down off campus on Tuesday morning.  This is the second murder of a Sumner student in less than a month.

Police say 16-year-old James Moore was shot as he prepared to catch a school bus to Sumner High School Tuesday morning.  It happened near Barrett Brothers Park off of Goodfellow Boulevard just before 7:30 a.m.  Witnesses reported other students ran for cover when the gunfire began.

In September, another 16-year-old Sumner student named Chauncey Brown was shot and killed after leaving a party on Martin Luther King Boulevard the night of September 27.  His body was found the next day in the 4700 block of Cote Brilliante after he was reported missing.

Moore’s family tells News 4 that they believe the two murders are connected.

Renee Cooper, Moore’s cousin, says Moore witnessed a confrontation at the September 27 party before Brown’s murder.  The family believes Moore was targeted because he was a witness.

St. Louis Police would not comment on a possible connection, only saying that the investigators were looking at all possible leads.  Police also ask that anyone with information call CrimeStoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.

Police tell News 4 they are “monitoring” Sumner High School as this investigation continued.
