(KMOV) – A sea lion suddenly died following the 1 p.m. sea lion show at the Saint Louis Zoo on Sunday.

The sea lion, named “R.J.”, did not show any signs of being ill before the show, but the results of a necropsy by the St. Louis Zoo’s pathologist showed that he died of heart failure, according to zoo officials.

R.J., known for his smile, was born at the Saint Louis Zoo in 2003 and started training to perform in the sea lion show in 2007.

The Saint Louis Zoo’s sea lion shows will continue as scheduled on weekends only.
