LITCHFIELD, Illinois (KMOV) -- Students from a Grantfork elementary were on their way home from a field trip when the bus they were on collided with a tractor trailer in Litchfield, Illinois Monday afternoon.

Police said the wreck happened on southbound Interstate 55 at mile marker 57, about seven miles north of Litchfield, around 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said the bus was full of 6th-grade students from Grantfork Upper Elementary in the Highland CUSD 5. The 33 students were on their way back from a field trip to the Illinois state capitol when the school bus rear-ended the tractor trailer, according to officials.  The tractor trailer was slowing for construction zone traffic.

Eleven people, including the school bus driver, were injured in the accident.

A 12-year-old girl was transported to Cardinal Glennon with a broken leg.  Hospital officials tell News 4 Jessica Davis is in fair condition and will stay overnight.

"Having seen the photographs and the video myself of the scene, because I was looking to see what was coming in, and what we were going to be expecting, considering the amount of damage (Jessica) is lucky she wasn't more badly injuried," Dr. Rachel Charney said.

In addition, two more children were airlifted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital from Litchfield for further evaluation.  Three other children were evaluated in Litchfield and were expected to be released Monday night.  Two others were discharged earlier on Monday.

The driver of the school bus and another student were taken to a hospital in Springfield, Illinois.  Their conditions are unknown, but are believed to be minor.  Another student was taken to a hospital in Staunton with minor injuries.

We’ll be sure to have more details as soon as they become available.
