(KMOV)-- Sagging pants might soon become illegal in Collinsville. Violators could face up to a $300 fine.

It all started on Mother's Day when a family sitting on their front lawn saw multiple young men with their pants pulled down walking along the sidewalk.

So Councilman Liz Dalton brought a proposal to the city council Monday night banning pants that sit more than 3 inches below the waist.

The majority agreed it should go to a vote July 11th.

But Mayor John Miller is absolutely not in favor. "Do our taxpayers want us spending tax payer dollars to go around chasing people with sagging pants? I don't think so," he said.

"Where does it stop? If its sagging pants today is it going to be the wrong color hair next time or is it piercings or is it gonna be young ladies with too much cleavage? Where is it gonna stop," he continued.

If the ordinance passes the penalty will be a fine of between $100-300 plus possible community service. If a minor is penalized, their parents will be the ones held responsible.
