(KMOV) – Residents of a South County apartment building say they are stuck with an unlivable situation after the smell of a decaying body spread through the complex.
A man was found dead in his home at the Canyon Creek Apartments in the 4850 block of Lemay Ferry Rd. last Monday. Police say he had been dead for at least three weeks.
Residents there say the strong smell is lingering and spreading to other apartments.
“It’s pretty bad; you got the odor in your clothes and hair. You’re licking and smelling it,” Tom Shaeffer said about the smell in his apartment.
Several people who live around the unit, which is now sealed shut, are complaining of the foul smell and the flies.
The owner of the apartment said there has been some clean up in the dead man’s apartment and more is ahead. As for the other residents, he is willing to help but workers have not detected any smells or insects.
St. Louis County Health Department says the smell poses no health hazard.
Bio Ops, a crime scene clean up firm, states on its website the decaying body smell can permeate wood, brick and metal and if left untreated can last for an indefinite period.
Many residents say they can’t take it for much longer and are wanting to move but they will be charged a transfer fee as well as a charge for breaking the lease.
