ALTON, Ill. (AP) -- The waste hauler for Alton says the southern Illinois city doubled its recycling rate from 2011 to 2012.
Allied Waste Services representative Susan Piazza says adding large carts specifically for recycling has made the difference. She tells The Telegraph in Alton that recycling increased from 8 percent in 2011 to 16 percent in 2012. Piazza says it’s been “a huge success.” She says the city recycled about 1,400 tons of waste in 2012.
The company gave the city a plaque and $2,500 in September because of the recycling increases.
