(KMOV) – The rebuilt section of the westbound lanes of the Blanchette Bridge opened Friday morning, another sign that the entire project is ahead of schedule.

Earlier this week, several lanes and ramps were closed overnight as crews worked to restripe the bridge and remove the barrier on the eastbound span.

But work was completed early and Missouri Department of Transportation officials had the westbound lanes of the re-built bridge were opened ahead of the projected 6 a.m. opening.

The entire bridge is expected to officially open on Aug. 26, about two months ahead of schedule. A ribbon cutting was held earlier this month to commemorate the near completion.

Officials say rehabilitation to the 54-year-old westbound bridge cost about $63 million.

The shutdown followed the nearly two-year project to upgrade Highway 64 between west St. Louis County and the city. That project was completed in late 2009.
