(KMOV) – Police are searching for the person who shot a dog found dragging himself along a Jefferson County highway on Wednesday.

Police said the 3-month-old puppy was found by rescue workers on Highway 30 in the Cedar Hills area. According to a person with the Open Door Animal Santuary, he was shot in the back and a bullet was lodged in his spine.

Sources told News 4 it appeared the puppy was intentionally shot within close range.

The puppy was being treated at Veterinary Specialty Services off Manchester Rd. in Ballwin and the cost of surgery cost about $4,700.
