ST. LOUIS -- Two Missouri House members will host a public meeting on the Bridgeton landfill fire Thursday night in University City near St. Louis.

A waste fire at the north St. Louis County landfill and former limestone quarry has been burning for three years. Landfill owner Republic Services Inc. recently said it plans to build a dirt-filled trench to keep the underground fire from crossing over into a nearby federal Superfund site where radioactive waste resides.

State representatives Rory Ellinger and Bill Otto are convening the public session at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Heman Park Community Center, 975 Pennsylvania Ave.

Speakers include environmental activist Kay Drey; Bridgeton resident Dawn Chapman; Pattonville assistant fire chief Matt Lavanchy; and a representative from the office of St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley.
