Driver killed when propane tanker explodes in collision with coal truck

(KMOV) – Illinois State Police confirm one person was killed in a propane tanker truck explosion along the Randolph County line Tuesday afternoon

According to Randolph County Police, a propane tanker truck rear-ended a coal tractor trailer as it was making a left turn on County Line and Black Stump Roads.

The propane tanker then caught fire around 2:30 p.m., and burned for more than a  hour before fire crews could move in to contain the fire.

As crews were dousing various hot spots, the tanker exploded. Authorities say no firefighters were injured in the blast.

Randolph County Police say the driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.

Sparta, Steelville, Willis, Perry, and Cutler County fire departments are on the scene assisting with the collision.
