(KMOV) – Rani, the St. Louis Zoo’s pregnant elephant, is getting closer to giving birth.
Rani’s progesterone levels have dropped significantly over the past two days which could mean the birth date may happen within the next two weeks.
According to several elephant birth studies, the range of time for delivery is estimated to be from one to 13 days after the progesterone levels decrease.
The Zoo says Rani is doing well and they expect a successful birth and healthy baby elephant.
This will be the second baby for 15-year-old Rani and the third baby for 18-year-old Raja, the first Asian elephant ever born at the Saint Louis Zoo.
Elephant babies can weigh between 250 and 350 pounds at birth.
Blood tests indicate that the baby is a female.
