The St. Louis area has seen a roller-coaster of temperatures this winter, which means it’s in for another season of potholes.

It’s practically a guarantee in St. Louis. Shortly before Opening Day at Busch Stadium and the baseball season comes the pothole season.

The city says once again it’s offering its 48-hour guarantee: You report it, they fix it.

“That’s our guarantee,” said Todd Waeltermann with the St. Louis Streets Dept. “We’re going to get every pothole within 48 hours.”

Just this week, the calls came pouring in.

“Starting Monday, we started noticing a rise in the calls, 60 calls in the last three days,” Waeltermann said.

Over the past several months the city has streamlined its computerized system of getting the report of the pothole out to the crews in the field.

“We get updated every minute when they’re coming in so we now have an upgrade so we can respond quicker,” Waeltermann said.

At Century Tire in south St. Louis, Leo Shakofsky has been dealing with potholes for 27 years.

“Lot of cases, people don’t see them, it’s nighttime, unavoidable,” said Shakofsky.

He says hit a pothole hard enough and it can damage the lower control arm - which is part of the front-end suspension - rip out the side of the tire and damage the wheel rim.

To report potholes in your area, you can call the following numbers:

City of St. Louis – (314) 622-4800
Missouri Department of Transportation – (888) – ASK-MODOT
Illinois Department of Transportation – (618) – 346 – 3100.
