ST. LOUIS (KMOV)-- A man is shot and killed for allegedly trying to break into a home in St. Louis.

This happened around 1 a.m. Monday in the 5600 block of Maple.

Authorities said the 66-year-old homeowner knew his property had been broken into earlier in the day, so he routinely checked on the property to make sure it was secure.

The homeowner told police he went into the property and spotted 47-year-old Sylvester Williams inside. He reportedly ordered Williams not to move, but he refused and allegedly advanced toward him. The homeowner fired one shot, hitting Williams in the shoulder.

Williams was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

At this point, police say no charges have been filed against the homeowner.

Police will have to run this case past prosecutors before they do anything.
