St. Louis (KMOV) – Rusty bolts that held a 175-pound steel plate in place is the reason the plate fell off of Busch Stadium yesterday afternoon, according to building inspectors.

Stadium officials say the steel plates are in place for decorative purposes only and plan to hold the contractor responsible.

Workers will remove around 100 of the plates before the Cardinals return to play at home next week.

Crews roped off an area outside of Busch Stadium after a section of metal soffit fell to the sidewalk below after ground crews discovered the problem Monday afternoon.

The 175-pound steel plate fell from high on the structure, banging into the building on its way down to the sidewalk below.

No one was injured.  The Cardinals are out of town this week.
