CENTREVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Illinois State Police are investigating after an officer shot a woman while responding to domestic dispute in Centreville late Monday night.

Officials said a woman and her mother were arguing at the Ernest Smith apartments when the daughter brandished a knife. Officers responded to the scene after getting a call for a domestic dispute.

Upon their arrival, the daughter approached one of the officers. Police said the officer pulled out his gun and ordered the woman to get on the ground. She did not comply, but instead struggled with the officer.

During the struggle, the officer’s gun discharged, striking the woman in the back.

The woman was taken to the hospital and released within two hours.

Authorities said Illinois State Police are conducting interviews with witnesses and planned on turning over evidence to the state’s attorney, who will determine whether charges are filed.

The 39-year-old officer involved in the shooting has been on the police force for 10 years, five of them with Centreville.
