ST. PETERS, Mo. (KMOV) -- Fast-acting thieves stole nearly $5,000 worth of merchandise from Mid Rivers Mall over a few-day span. Police say the particular type of crime is on the rise.

St. Peters police said in June a Dillard’s store manager tried to intervene and the group of criminals pepper sprayed him. Police arrested a woman they say was part of that incident.

On August 13, the same woman went into went into Macy’s at Mid Rivers Mall with three others and grabbed handfuls of Ralph Lauren and Levi jeans. They got more than $3,000 worth before they escaped in a car waiting outside.

A group of men went to the same Macy’s two days later and carried out $2,000 worth of Polo shirts in trash bags.

“They only take a few minutes. They know exactly what they’re looking for, they grab handfuls of it and run out the door where the car is waiting,” said Melissa Doss with the St. Peters Police Department. “It’s common enough when it happens, we’re aware of what they’re doing.”

The woman arrested has not been formally charged and is not giving up information about the other suspects.
