MADISON COUNTY, Ill. (KMOV) – Illinois State Police says a woman was arrested after more than $1.5 million in cash was seized during a traffic stop near Collinsville on Saturday.

Carole Galvez, 62, was charged Monday with felony money laundering.

Police said a trooper was patrolling southbound I-55 near Collinsville when they stopped a 2004 white Volvo for improper lane usage with an illegal license plate cover.

The trooper became suspicious and got permission from Galvez to search the vehicle. That’s when the officer found 27 vacuum-sealed plastic bags containing $1,589,860.

Galvez was arrested at the scene.

“Cash amounts this large are usually connected to illegal drug trafficking,” said District 11 Commander Cpt. Brad Parsons.

Illinois State Police said it was one of the largest cash seizures in the state in years.

Galvez is currently being held at the Madison County Jail on a $500,000 bond.

If found guilty, she faces four to 15 years in prison.
