(KMOV) -- An early morning manhunt near the Meramec River came to an end after authorities discovered the suspect's body in the river.

Police were searching for Gene Miller in a wooded area just south of Eureka, Missouri. At the time of the manhunt, Miller was considered armed and dangerous.

The incident started around 4:00 a.m. on Monday.

Miller, who was wanted for outstanding warrants in Jefferson City and in Jefferson County, was spotted at the Casino Queen.

Jefferson County sheriff deputies tell News 4 that Miller led police on a 30 mile chase from East St. Louis, Illinois into St. Louis. The chase continued west on I-270 to I-44. Miller then drove south on Highway 109 and ended at Highway W where he jumped out of his car and ran from police.

Police tell News 4 that Miller then fired shots at Missouri troopers. None of the officers were injured.

A SWAT team was activated and authorities searched the woods near Twin Rivers Road south of Highway W for hours.

Around 7:30 a.m. police found Miller's body floating in the river and the manhunt ended.

The cause of death is still uncertain.
