O’FALLON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Police say an increasing crime trend can easily be prevented with a couple of simple tips.
At least two residents in O’Fallon, Missouri have recently had their license tabs or entire license plates stolen from their vehicles and, in most cases, owners of the license plates have no idea when or where the tabs were taken, according to police.
Police suggest that when you receive your tabs to apply them to the license plate when it is clean and dry. They also suggest that you take a razor blade and run it over the tab once they have been applied to the plate.
“If you do have it scored when they try to take it off they are not going to get it all in one pull,” Officer Diane Damke, of the O’Fallon Police Department, said. “And if they realize that it is scored, they are less likely to use you as a victim.”
The Missouri Department of Revenue has started a new program to fight the problem with what it calls “enhanced tabs.” The tabs include not just the year but also the entire license plate number which discourages criminals from stealing your tabs to use on another vehicle.
