ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – United States Capitol Police and the FBI were investigating multiple threats made against Congressman Todd Akin.

Officials said multiple people have threatened rape and harm against Akin, his staff and family.

A spokesperson for Akin would not answer whether the congressman is receiving additional security in light of the threats.

The threats come on the heels of a tumultuous week for Akin, who has refused calls from within the GOP to drop his bid to challenge Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill for a U.S. Senate seat.

Several people within the Republican Party, including presidential candidate Mitt Romney, asked Akin to drop out after making comments about pregnancy and “legitimate” rape during a TV interview on Sunday.

He made the remarks while defending his opposition to abortion in all circumstances.
