UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- Police are investigating after a staff member found a handgun at a University City alternative high school on Wednesday night. So far, however, the district has hesitated to notify parents.

The Liberman Learning Center, located in the 8100 block of Groby, is an alternative school for University City High School students. According to the school district, a staff member found a handgun in a trashcan on Wednesday night.

District officials say they contacted police, who examined the gun and found it inoperable. In a written statement, officials say the safety and well-being of students and staff are top priorities. Parents will be notified of the incident on Friday, according to the district.

A spokesperson would not tell News 4 why the district chose to wait two days to alert parents.

University City police are still investigating whether a student brought the gun to school. The district, meanwhile, has launched its own investigation.
