(KMOV) – Police say drag racing is to blame for an accident that happened late Monday night in south St. Louis.

According to authorities, two vehicles were traveling around 60 miles-per-hour down Hampton Avenue near Neosho Street when they collided.  It was reported that one car hit a light pole and small tree.

Officers say one of the vehicles involved was stolen shortly before the accident from a home on Wilmington Avenue.

Witnesses told police that four men got out of their vehicle after it crashed, and into the car they were racing.

All suspects fled the scene and one vehicle was abandoned at the site of the collision.

Reports of racing down Hampton Avenue near Eichelberger Street were also made around the time of the incident.

No further information has been released, but police say that it's unusual for cars to race through that area.
