(KMOV.com) – A suspect was shot and killed after allegedly leading police on a high-speed pursuit that started in Franklin County and ended in St. Louis County.

Police said the chase began when Missouri Highway Patrol officers spotted a suspected drug vehicle in Franklin County on Friday afternoon.

Jose Garcia, 49, reportedly fled patrolmen when they attempted to stop his vehicle.

Garcia fled eastbound on Interstate 44. Franklin County police joined MHP in the pursuit as the suspect led authorities on a high-speed chase.

The suspect vehicle exited I-44 at Highway 109 in Eureka, and drove through several subdivisions. The vehicle reportedly had several near accidents before it was stopped in a residential neighborhood.

Authorities said Garcia pointed a gun at officers. Police opened fire, striking the suspect several times.

Garcia was transported to the hospital, where he later died.
