(KMOV.com) -- A man is accused of swiping an iPhone right from the victim’s hands.

Imani Shakoor has been charged with robbery after St. Clair County Sheriff's deputies say he snatched a phone from a woman who was texting while riding MetroLink.

Police told News 4 Shakoor was watching a woman send text messages as the train was moving. When it stopped at an East St. Louis station, he grabbed her phone from her hands, jumped off the train and took off toward the Casino Queen.

That man is now behind bars.

News 4 has learned this may just be the very latest in an alarming crime trend. Thieves are going after iPhones in what's been termed "apple-picking.”

On Thursday, a jogger in a south St. Louis park also fell victim. Police said expensive cell phones can be goldmines for thieves.

"The cost of cell phones is steadily rising, so it's an easy grab and a large sum of money," said Lt. Scott Weymouth.

There are tech-savvy protections after the phones are stolen, but police say awareness may be the precautions.

“You just have to be aware of your surroundings, watch where you are at,” Weymouth said.
