ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) -- St. Louis County Police say a store clerk at a mattress store on South Lindbergh was struck in the head with a gun during a hold-up attempt.

Police said the incident happened Monday evening just before 9:00 at the Mattress Firm SuperCenter near Lindbergh and Interstate 55.

Police say the gunman was attempting to rob the store and at some point tried to shoot the clerk, but the gun misfired. The gunman then struck the clerk in the head with the gun and took off on foot. He was last seen in the area around the Holiday Inn which is right behind the mattress store.

Several officers responded to search for the suspect, but there were no reports of an arrest. Police did provide a description. They say the suspect is a dark-skinned black male, about 6' tall with a thin build. He appeared to be in his mid-30's. He was wearing a dark sweatshirt, dark jeans and a black ski mask.
