(KMOV.com) – Two people were killed in a Labor Day accident on Interstate 255, near the interchange with Interstate 64.
According to police, the driver of an SUV traveling at a high rate of speed attempted to merge onto Interstate 255 from Interstate 64 when the car side-swiped another vehicle traveling northbound on I-255. The car that was side-swiped, a pickup truck, crossed the median and crashed into another vehicle, which was traveling soutbound on I-255, head-on.
A female passenger of the soutbound car was pronounced dead at the scene. The male driver was pronounced dead at a St. Louis hospital. At least two other people were reportedly injured.
The accident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police. Charges are pending.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released.
All lanes on Interstate 255 were closed for about 40 minutes.
