(KMOV) – Police say a man who walked out of the hospital after a wreck with a police car near downtown St. Louis is back in custody.

According to police, an officer was responding to an aid call after shots were fired at Dr. King Drive and Evans around 9:25 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police said that’s when a white Volkswagen collided with the squad car near the intersection of Washington and Compton.

An occupant in the Volkswagen then fled the scene on foot.

A 21-year-old female passenger was thrown from the rear window and found unconscious at the scene. She was transported to the hospital in serious condition. The 27-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. Louis University Hospital.

The driver was treated and left the hospital against medical advice around 4 a.m., according to SLU Hospital spokesperson Laura Keller.

According to Keller, the driver was not in police custody or guarded by officers. He was arrested on Monday and taken into custody.

The 35-year-old officer was transported to a hospital where he was treated for bumps and bruises and released.

Police said a handgun was later recovered from the Volkswagen.

Authorities said they are still searching for the suspect who left the initial scene on foot.
